Union High School

Athletics takes place during the 1st and 4th terms. Our first meeting, SPORTS DAY, is held early in the year to identify and encourage potential athletes. This is a colourful event of rivalry between the three houses, Botha, Rhodes and Riebeek.

The athletics team trains three times per week under the watchful eye of the coaches. Youngsters who perform well progress from having been chosen to represent the Camdeboo team, to the next level of selection, the CACADU team. The final round of trials is for the selection of a team to represent the Eastern Cape at the National Inter Provincial meeting held each year.

Over the last two weeks, Union Preparatory School and the High School Junior Department have had their inter-house athletics days as well as Inter-schools against Volkskool on Tuesday afternoon. In perfect weather conditions, our beautiful school fields were a hive of activity where athletes were involved in a total of 62 events, ranging from Under 7 to Under 13, involving field and track events. Many of the races were closely contested, making it difficult for the place judges.
During the Inter-schools meeting 16 new records were set, 7 by Union athletes.
Congratulations to the following learners on setting new records:
Ciara Kivedo - U9 60m
Daniel Short - U9 60m and 80m
Chloe Erasmus - U10 Long Jump
Fatima Siraz - U10 1200m
Sisipho Arnols - U13 100m and Long Jump

Junior Athletics vs LVS
At the Inter-schools meeting the final points position was:  Union 613 and LVS 654

Zonal Athletics
A small group of Union athletes, from Under 10 to Under 13, then took part in the Zonal Athletics Meeting at the Collie Koeberg Track on Friday. They all did their best and we await the official results to see who will be invited to the Mega Districts Meeting in Port Elizabeth on the 17th of February.
