On Tuesday morning, 6 September, a group of postgraduate physics students from Stellenbosch University – backed by the professional and scientific bodies of Optica, SPIE and NITheCS – visited Union High School, Graaff-Reinet as part of an outreach programme to promote an interest in STEM fields (i.e. science, technology, engineering and mathematics) among high school learners.
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ต๐๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐ฎ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ณ๐๐ป ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ – applicable to the school curriculum – which covered a wide range of scientific topics, such as optics, momentum, electricity and electromagnetic induction, to name but a few.
The learners enjoyed the session tremendously and now have a much better understanding of the study and career opportunities that are available to students of math and science.
