The Results Are Out!

We are unbelievably proud of our Matric Class of 2021, who, despite spending the majority of their FET academic career clouded in a global pandemic, has achieved a 𝟭𝟬𝟬% 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 with 80% of its matriculants bagging bachelor’s degree passes and the other 20%, diploma passes.

These results place Union first in the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality.

We’d like to give a special 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗢𝗨𝗧 to Union cricketer Skaakir Kazi who took 6/56 in 21 overs during Union’s declaration match against Edgemead High School.

We Stand Tall!

On Wednesday, 19 January, Union High School’s new Grade 5s had the privilege of adding their names to Union’s Stand Tall Project – a participatory art installation created through the collective involvement of Union High School’s learners.

With the inspiration behind the project being the habit of parents measuring their children at home, ‘’𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩’ was launched at Union High School last year as an interactive installation that aims to commemorate a learner’s time at Union, by measuring their height at certain intervals during their school career.

Much like the doorframe at home, this wall will record a learner’s growth at their Union home.

Today, the new Grade 5 learners were invited to stand against the wall while their teachers marked off their height. Then, armed with a permanent marker, they labelled it with their name, surname and date.

This installation will gradually have more and more individual markings and names added to it at specific intervals during the school year, which we hope in years to come will create a constellation of measurements blurring the boundaries between art and everyday life.

UHS Welcomes Mrs Linda Rowe

Union High School is delighted to welcome Mrs Linda Rowe to our team of educators.

Mrs Rowe – who boasts 33 years’ experience in the education sector – will be teaching Afrikaans to the school’s Grade 8s and 9s.

Mrs Rowe recently settled in Graaff-Reinet after having moved here from Orkney where she served as an educator at Milner High School in the nearby Klerksdorp.

Mrs Rowe brings with her both a passion and enthusiasm for teaching and we are proud to have her on board!

Calvin Beck Takes The Reins As Hockey Coach

Union High School is incredibly excited to announce the appointment of Mr Calvin Beck as our new Head of Hockey and Sports Administrator.

Mr Beck is one of the top young coaches in South African youth hockey today and is committed to building a strong programme here at Union.

Before joining Union, Mr Beck served as the Head of Hockey at Hoërskool Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein, where he coached both the girls’ and boys’ squads while being responsible for the overall development of hockey as a sport at the school.

Prior to this, he served as coach to the University of the Free State’s 2nd men’s hockey team and assisted the 1st team. He also enjoyed a 7-year tenure as the coach of the Central University of Technology’s hockey teams (four with the women’s squad and three with the men’s).

In addition to this, he boasts a long-standing association with Free State Hockey – as coach, selector and head of High Performance for teams from u/16 through to senior level.

To say that we are excited about the wealth of knowledge and breadth of experience Mr Beck is bringing with him to the benefit of our players, is an understatement.

We look forward to a bright future for Union hockey with Mr Beck at the helm.

Staff Awarded For Commitment And Long Service

We were very fortunate to be able to start our year off by celebrating some of our staff’s long-service milestones.

While we continue to reiterate that the commitment, dedication and hard work by all staff is noticed, greatly appreciated and worthy of recognition, in this particular event we honoured members of staff who have been with Union for 10 years (2 awardees), 15 years (1 awardee) and 20 years (1 awardee).

Over the years, these loyal colleagues have helped to make this institution and the Union community who we are today.

Please join us in congratulating Mr 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤 𝙎𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙪𝙨 (10 years), Mrs 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚 (10 years), Mr 𝙅𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙥𝙝 𝙊𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙧 (15 years) and Mrs 𝙉𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙖 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙 (20 years).

Virtual Music Showcase

Over the past two years, Union High School’s music students have continued to make steady progress on the piano despite the many disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As they’ve been deprived of the opportunity of performing in front of a live audience for quite some time, our Music teachers, Mrs Sanette Brink and Ms Zelda van Rooyen, dead set on sharing their students’ talents with the Union community, asked all their pianists to carefully prepare a piece for a virtual music showcase at the end of 2021.

Please take the time to watch our fabulous performers!

The showcase includes performances on the piano by all our pianists and includes beginner piano pieces through to advanced.

Thank you to all of our performers for taking the time to video and share your beautiful music.

We look forward to the day that our Music Department can host their Annual Music Evening in person on the Union stage again just like in years past.
