Junior Speech Competion

Union High School, Graaff-Reinetโ€™s ๐—๐—จ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—˜๐—–๐—› ๐—–๐—ข๐— ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—ง๐—œ๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก, held early Wednesday morning, 16 August, was a memorable event indeed.

The top speakers from Grade 5, 6 and 7 confidently took the stage in a room filled with their peers, proud parents and a panel of adjudicators.

๐™๐™๐™š ๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™š๐™˜๐™๐™š๐™จ ๐™œ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™ฌ๐™š๐™ง๐™š ๐™™๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ๐™š ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™˜๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ. From humorous anecdotes to emotional stories, intellectual discussions and serious topics, each speaker brought something unique to the stage. The level of preparation and the delivery of these young speakers left everyone in awe.

Union High School would like to express its gratitude to all the talented participants who took part in the competition. It was truly inspiring to see so many enthusiastic learners presenting their well-rehearsed speeches. Their dedication and hard work were clearly visible.

A special mention goes to the ๐—ช๐—œ๐—ก๐—ก๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ of each respective grade. In Grade 7, Cate Cochrane took home the victory, followed by Sinalo Blaauw as the runner-up. In Grade 6, Clea Clark stood out with her outstanding speech and Rachel Wenham was recognized as the runner-up. Finally, in Grade 5, Adam Clark delivered an exceptional speech and was declared the winner, while Emily Raath received recognition as the runner-up.

Chess Challenge

On Tuesday evening, 15 August, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet hosted a ๐—ฆ๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฃ ๐—”๐—ก๐—— ๐—–๐—›๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ฆ ๐—ฃ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ก๐—ง๐—ฆ’ ๐—–๐—›๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ก๐—š๐—˜ in the school’s Tony Burrell Union.

The evening provided an opportunity for the schoolโ€™s chess players โ€“ from prep school through to matric โ€“ to compete against their parents in a game of chess.

As the event commenced, the ๐™๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ช๐™จ๐™ž๐™–๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™ก๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ ๐™ฌ๐™š๐™ง๐™š ๐™œ๐™š๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™™ ๐™ช๐™ฅ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™™๐™š๐™–๐™™ ๐™จ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™—๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ž๐™ง ๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ง๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก ๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™ฅ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™จ.

Throughout the evening, across the floor, participants could be seen crowded close to the chessboards, nervously assessing the game, with the opportunity of beating their opponents cause for much excitement and it was quite heart-warming to see the younger children playing their moves like stalwarts with rapt concentration and a collected demeanour.

In the end, whether a match was won, lost or drawn, a ton of fun was had by all!

After conclusion of the matches, all those who attended could help themselves to a delicious selection of soups and breads.
