On Friday afternoon, 24 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s rugby boys participated in Hoรซr Volkskoolโ€™s 2023 ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆรซ ๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ – a pre-season tournament that allows local rugby teams the opportunity to effectively finalise their pre-season preparations in a competitive yet relaxed and accommodating environment.

While some of our players had to sit this one out due to cricketing commitments, the rest of the boys who have been putting in the hard yards with their pre-season training, valued the opportunity to take the field again.

We extend our ๐—š๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ง๐—˜๐—™๐—จ๐—Ÿ ๐—ง๐—›๐—”๐—ก๐—ž๐—ฆ to Volkskool for inviting us to participate and giving our boys the opportunity to play. It was an enjoyable afternoon for all involve.

The annual Karoo Gala was held in the Hoรซr Volkskool swimming pool, on Wednesday afternoon, 22 February.

In events ranging from u/9 through to the Open swimmers, 104 events in total, our swimmers made a difference by seeing that the Union lanes were filled where ever possible.

Congratulations to Unionโ€™s juniors, who claimed the win for Union in the Primary Schoolsโ€™ section with 457 points, followed by Laer Volkskool in second place (335), Gill Primary in third place with 157 points, the Homeschoolers in 4th place (49) and Cradock Primary in fifth place (18).

๐—–๐—ข๐—ก๐—š๐—ฅ๐—”๐—ง๐—จ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก๐—ฆ to Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet Grade 4 learners, Taylor Jacobs and Mateo Schoeman, who were announced as the ๐—๐—จ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—–๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ซ and ๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—–๐—ง๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—Ÿ๐—จ๐——๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—จ๐— , respectively.

Their superb solo swims saw Taylor setting a new ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—–๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—— in the Girls u/10 4x25m Individual Medley, Girls u/10 50m Freestyle and the Girls u/10 50m Backstroke, while Mateo broke the ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—–๐—ข๐—ฅ๐——๐—ฆ in the Boys u/10 50m Breaststroke and the Boys u/10 50m Backstroke.

The UPS u/10 Girls’ relay team, comprised of Taylor Jacobs, Klara van Jaarsveld, Allison Gilfillan and Catie Davenport, also added to Unionโ€™s point tally, improving the Medley Relay ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—–๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—— time with 7 seconds! They also claimed the win in the Freestyle Relay.

The UPS u/10 Boys’ relay team, comprised of Mateo Schoeman, Michael Finlaison, Dan Davenport and Grant Murray, also didnโ€™t hold back, smashing the ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—–๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—— time in the Medley Relay by 10 seconds and winning the Freestyle Relay comfortably.

With regards to the ๐—ฆ๐—˜๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—ฆ๐—˜๐—–๐—ง๐—œ๐—ข๐—ก, Union extends its congratulations to Hoรซr Volkskool, on coming out victorious.

Here, Volkskoolโ€™s Kate-Lynn Kruger claimed the title of senior Victrix Ludorum, while Marlowโ€™s Hennie Snyman won the Victor Ludorum title.

Union claimed second place in the senior girlsโ€™ section, with the boys coming in third in theirs.

This afternoon, Tuesday, 21 February, saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet hosting its first #SANBS Blood Drive for 2023 in the school’s Tony Burrell Union.

It was wonderful to see so many of our learners, staff and even some of the broader Union community coming together for this great cause.

Unionโ€™s batsmen put a total of 94 for 6 on the board in their allotted overs, with John-Henry King top scoring with 25 runs.

Volkskool then went in to bat, managing a total of 63 for 8. Well done to bowlers Aidan Ferreira and Quinn Naude, who took two wickets each.

Swimmers Go The Extra Mile

Sixteen Union swimmers โ€“ many of whom were newbies – participated in the 99th annual ๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ ๐— ๐—œ๐—Ÿ๐—˜ at the Sundays River Cannonville Slipway this Sunday morning, 19 February, joining hundreds of other swimmers who competed in this year’s edition of Africa’s oldest open-water swimming event.

All our swimmers successfully completed the 1,6 kilometre swim in good spirits and in good time, with our last competitor crossing the finish line in the 35th minute.

The results are as follows:

Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet swimmers:
โ€ข Grade 3 learner ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ finished the Ladiesโ€™ Mile 70th overall and 23rd in the 14 Years and Under category.

The event saw Unionโ€™s swimmers from Grade 1 through to Grade 12 give their utmost best, filling the lanes with their green swimming caps.

Our Grade 1 to 7 swimmers put forth a stellar effort, to win their section with 561 points to Laer Volkskoolโ€™s 402. Although our seniors had to admit defeat to their Hoรซr Volkskool counterparts with 253 points to 345, the overall point totals of Unionโ€™s 814, compared to Volkskoolโ€™s 747, still saw the results tilt in our favour.

Ben achieved four 1st places overall for the Boys u/16 4x25m IM, the 50m Butterfly, the Grade 8 to 12 100m Freestyle event and the 50m Freestyle as well as second places in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke.

Archery – Well Done Elandri!

Congratulations to Grade 6 learner ๐—˜๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ณ on excellent results achieved at the first archery competition of the year, hosted this past Saturday, 11 February, by Hoรซr Volkskool.

Elandri managed to claim two silver medals in the competitionโ€™s primary schools section for girls – one in the HVS Open and one in the Graaff-Reinet Open – while competing against archers from Uitenhage, Despatch and Jeffreys Bay.

While the Union boys worked steadily towards a victory, spectators and fielders found it difficult to keep their eye on the action in the middle, with Mother Nature once again producing a mesmerizing backdrop to this cricketing encounter.
