Junior Cricket vs Cradock Primary

On Wednesday afternoon, 15 February, Union welcomed Laerskool Cradock Primary School’s cricketers to our campus for an u/11A and u/13A match.

Union won the toss and elected to bowl first. Union’s bowlers bowled brilliantly to restrict Cradock to 91 after 20 overs. Owen Paxton, Salmaan Steele and Joubert Vorster claimed 1 wicket apiece.

Union chased down the target with 3 wickets down, winning the game by 7 wickets. John Henry King was the best batsman for Union, scoring 45 not out.

Cradock won the toss and elected to bat first.

Cayden Thompson was Union’s best bowler with figures of 4 for 13 in 3 overs. Nathaneal Phillips also bowled brilliantly, with figures of 2 for 6 in 1 over. The Union team was brilliant in the field, with 3 run outs.

Union reached the target set by their Cradock counterparts in 10.5 overs.

Josh Kingwill was Union’s best batsman with 32 runs from 19 balls. He also smacked one massive six ๐Ÿ‘

Union won the match by 6 wickets.

Debating

On Monday, 13 February, the Union High School, Graaff-Reinet ๐——๐—˜๐—•๐—”๐—ง๐—œ๐—ก๐—š ๐—ง๐—˜๐—”๐—  โ€“ consisting of Brigette Oelofsen, Caitrin Spence and Musa Zweni โ€“ enjoyed a wonderful afternoon competing against Gill College.

Both teams were very well prepared and arguments both for and against were convincing. The Union team narrowly won the debate with a compelling performance. In addition, four speakers delivered highly entertaining impromptu speeches.

EP Biathlon Champs

Well done to Union biathlete Ben Lemke, who claimed a silver medal in the Boys u/17 age group at the ๐—˜๐—ฃ ๐—–๐—›๐—”๐— ๐—ฃ๐—ฆ in Gqeberha on Sunday, 12 February.

Union lost the toss and were sent in to bat.

The hosting school won the toss and sent Union in to bat.

Union lost an early wicket, but ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น managed to keep the innings together. He was unlucky not to get to his half century, ending on a total of 42.

Chess Tournament

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet hosted a friendly individual ๐—–๐—›๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ฆ tournament on Tuesday afternoon, 31 January, with Hoรซr and Laer Volkskool as our guests.

All-in-all 42 chess players contested four matches each while competing for the top spot.

Cross Country Results

As a school, Union endeavours to be successful in sport on both a local, provincial and national level.

It is events, however, like yesterday afternoon’s whole-school Interhouse cross-country, which epitomises the true ethos of sport at Union.

All the learners did exceptionally well and thoroughly enjoyed running their various distances (from 3km to 6km, depending on their age group) in beautiful surroundings.

This time around it was Arnott House who won the day, but every learner who took part should be recognised for the effort and willingness to push themselves and improve.

Junior Speech Evening

On Wednesday evening, 1 February, the Grade 8 and 9 Union High School, Graaff-Reinet learners took the stage at the Tony Burrell Union for a fruitful ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—˜๐—–๐—› ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ก๐—œ๐—ก๐—š.

All participating learners impressed, elaborating on their chosen topics with aplomb.

Through thorough inquiry, they shared content about the importance of homework, whether humans should colonize Mars, vaping, and bringing back extinct species.
