Interschools Gala Results

As per usual, the annual ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ๐—–๐—›๐—ข๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—ฆ ๐—š๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—” between the Union Schools and Volkskool – held this past Tuesday afternoon, 13 February – was a thrilling and closely contested event.

Despite the unbearable heat, the young swimmers displayed remarkable perseverance and determination throughout the competition. ๐—ช๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฉ๐—ผ๐—น๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ธ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น for their victory and express our gratitude for their warm hospitality as hosts of this memorable event.

โ€ข In the senior category, the competition was neck and neck, with both teams exhibiting exceptional skill and performance. The final score stood at 364 points for Volkskool and 323 points for Union. It was a fierce battle, and every swimmer from both schools should be commended for their outstanding efforts.

Notable achievements were witnessed during the gala, with two standout individuals leaving their mark. ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ธ๐—ฒ (๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ) displayed his prowess by breaking the 50m Breaststroke record, winning six races and earning the prestigious title of Victor Ludorum for senior boys. ๐—”๐—น๐˜†๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฝ also showcased her talent by breaking the 50m Freestyle record and securing victory in four races.

โ€ข In the primary school section, Volkskool claimed a total of 619 points, while Union accumulated 567 points. We must give special recognition to Union’s ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐˜€, who achieved impressive results in multiple events. Taylor secured 1st place in the 50m Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle races, 4th place in the 100m Freestyle (Grade 5 to 7) race and 2nd place in the u/12 4x25m IM race.

๐——๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜, another u/11 swimmer, claimed 1st place in the u/12 4x25m IM and another set of 1st places in the 50m Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke races and a 1st place in the 100m Grade 5 to 7 Freestyle race. He also came a close second in the 50m Breaststroke event.

Swimming – SA Schools Trials

๐—ช๐—˜๐—Ÿ๐—Ÿ ๐——๐—ข๐—ก๐—˜ to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet swimmers – Alyssa Trollip, Mark Lemke, Esethu Mabula, Gerda Clarke, Ben Lemke and Zoรซ Mills – who have qualified to compete at the SA Schools Trials being held in East London this Saturday, 17 February.

Junior Tennis vs Cradock

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Top 6 boys’ and girls’ junior tennis players travelled to Cradock this afternoon for a mid-week fixture against Cradock Primary School.

Although the results may not have favoured us this time, we are confident that our Top 6 tennis players will continue to grow and excel in future fixtures.

New Educators – Senior Department

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Senior Department also welcomed two new additions to its staff this year!

Firstly, we are delighted to welcome back ๐— ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜€, who has previously taught at Union and will now be the Class Teacher for Grade 8B. ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜จ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ. Mrs Botes will be teaching Geography to our Grade 10, 11, and 12 learners, Social Sciences to our Grade 8 and 9 students, as well as Life Orientation and PE for our Grade 8 and 9 learners.

Secondly, we are excited to introduce ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฎ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ต, a fresh new face at Union. New Educators – Junior Department

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Junior Department was excited to welcome two ๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช ๐—˜๐——๐—จ๐—–๐—”๐—ง๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—ฆ to its compliment of staff at the beginning of the year.

๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€ has seamlessly settled into her role and is providing excellent instruction to our learners. In addition to being the class teacher for Grade 7M, she is teaching a diverse range of subjects such as Life Skills and Art for the Grade 5 learners, Afrikaans and Natural Sciences and Technology for the Grade 7s and Life Orientation and PT for the Grade 6 girls.

We are also thrilled to have ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜†-๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€ on our team. Her dedication and passion for teaching is evident in her work. Miss Abels is the Class Teacher for Grade 6A and is teaching mathematics for our Grade 5s and 6s, as well as Life Orientation and PT for the Grade 5 and 6 boys.

Interhouse Gala

Summer weather and happy learners made for a perfect start to the week as Union High School, Graaff-Reinet enjoyed its annual ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—›๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—˜ ๐—š๐—”๐—Ÿ๐—” for its Grade 5 to 12 swimmers on Monday evening, 5 February.

The two houses entered into the spirit of the day and gave great support to all the swimmers and, after an evening of speedy swimming, a lot of effort and extraordinary Union spirit, ๐˜ฟ๐™–๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™ƒ๐™ค๐™ช๐™จ๐™š ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™จ ๐™ช๐™ก๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™˜๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™™ ๐™–๐™จ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™ฎ๐™š๐™–๐™งโ€™๐™จ ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ, with a total of 636 points, compared to Arnott’s commendable 562.

The Interhouse Gala holds a special place in our hearts as its always an event thatโ€™s filled with smiles, friendly rivalry and a strong sense of camaraderie among all those participating. Last nightโ€™s event only served to โ€“ once again โ€“ remind us of how fortunate we all are to be a part of such an incredible school community.

Friday, 2 February, saw the Union Schools’ annual ๐—๐—จ๐—ก๐—œ๐—ข๐—ฅ ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—›๐—ข๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—˜ ๐—”๐—ง๐—›๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—ง๐—œ๐—–๐—ฆ ๐——๐—”๐—ฌ for Grade 1 to 7 learners being held.

The year-long rivalry between Arnott House (in blue) and Daly House (in red) was kicked off in fine style, as the young athletes gave it their all in various track and field events.

There were many proud moments and shared joy throughout the day, as the learners cheered on their classmates and showcased their athletic abilities.

On Saturday, 3 February, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s u/11A and u/13A cricket teams faced off against their counterparts from neighbouring school, Laer Volkskool Graaff-Reinet, in an exciting cricketing encounter.

In the ๐—จ/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—” ๐— ๐—”๐—ง๐—–๐—›, Laer Volkskool won the toss and elected to bat first. Union’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance, bowling out the opposition for a total of 69 runs in 29 overs. A special mention goes to ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ฎ ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น, who was awarded the well-deserved title of โ€˜Man of the Matchโ€™. Joshua bowled 7 overs (of which two were maiden overs) claiming 5 wickets for only 10 runs.

The Union team chased down the target in the 9th over with ease. Opening batsmen Jordan Maritz contributed 32 runs and Dante Mills, 10. The team’s collective efforts resulted in a victory for Union, winning the match by 8 wickets.

In the u/15 match, Union’s bowlers performed exceptionally well, bowling Cradock out for just 47 runs. The u/15 team quickly chased down the target, winning the match by 5 wickets. An opening partnership of 100 runs between Yaseen Kazi and MS de Beer set a solid foundation for the team. Yaseen played an outstanding innings, scoring 60 runs off 95 balls. Tristan Hulleman was Union’s best bowler in the match, taking 3 wickets for just 4 runs in 2.5 overs.
