On Friday, 1 March, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s u/13A team faced off against Summerwood Primary School at the Botanics Sports Grounds.
𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩.
With a collective effort from Union’s batters, they were able to accumulate a respectable total of 80 runs. The bowlers from Union displayed their brilliance, with Ryonn Naudé taking 2 crucial wickets.
𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘯𝘢𝘪𝘭-𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩, 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘺 2 𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘴.
The following day, on Saturday, 2 March, Union once again found themselves batting first after losing the toss.
𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚, 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙅𝙤𝙨𝙝 𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙥𝙞𝙫𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨, 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 53.
Union managed to post a total of 112 runs. In yet another nail-biting finish, Summerwood emerged victorious once again, this time with 6 wickets and 7 balls remaining. Murray Hope stood out as the top performer among Union’s bowlers, taking 2 important wickets.
Over the weekend, Union’s u/11A cricketers wrapped up their season with matches against a visiting Summerwood Primary School.
In the Pro20 match on Friday, Summerwood won the toss and chose to bat first. Union’s bowling performance was exceptional, displaying discipline and making it challenging for the opposing batsmen to score runs. They bowled Summerwood out for a total of 79 runs. 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘂 𝗞𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼 and 𝗨𝘁𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲 each took two wickets. 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆, despite not taking any wickets, proved to be the most economical bowler, conceding only 5 runs in his 4 overs.
𝘼𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖 𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙙𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙯𝙡𝙚, 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚. Although they lost wickets early on, 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 and 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼 𝗠𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮 steadied the ship with a partnership of 35 runs. Edwin Holmes then formed another crucial partnership with 𝗨𝘁𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗲 (scoring 25 runs off 20 balls), which ultimately shifted the game in Union’s favor. Edwin Holmes emerged as the top scorer, contributing 36 runs off 28 balls and was awarded the Man of the Match. Union secured victory with 5 wickets in hand.
In the 30-over match on Saturday, Union won the toss and elected to bat first. While all the batsmen showed promise, a lack of concentration led to their downfall, resulting in the loss of wickets. Edwin Holmes made a valiant effort but struggled as wickets fell around him. Union was bowled out for a total of 49 runs. Despite the low target, Union’s bowlers gave their best to defend it. Edwin Holmes, Uthmaan Steele and Sintayu Kaitro each took two wickets. However, Summerwood managed to secure a victory by 4 wickets.
