During Term 2, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Primary English Department (Grades 5, 6 and 7) embarked on an exciting educational journey by hosting a spelling contest designed to enhance the vocabulary and comprehension skills of their learners.

The contest began with the distribution of spelling lists at the start of the term. Alongside learning the correct spellings, learners were also tasked with understanding the meanings of these words, thereby integrating language skills with their overall academic curriculum.

The highlight of this term-long endeavour was the spelling contest, where learners showcased their learning and competed for top honours. The competition culminated in recognizing the best spellers in each grade, with winners receiving well-deserved cash prizes.

Senior Rugby vs Bergsig – Results

On Saturday the 25th of May 2024, Union’s 1st XV travelled to Uitenhage ( Kariega) to play against Bergsig. 

Bergsig got off to a flying start by scoring the first try and taking the lead. Union got a penalty and decided to take the three points. Bergsig however managed to break the Union defence on several more opportunities and extending their lead. Bergsig won the game by 3-45.

The 3rd round of the Sarah Baartman Chess Trials will will be held at Union High School on Saturday 1 June. We encourage chess players of all ages to enter.

On 11 June Laer Volkskool will be hosting the Graaff-Reinet Circuit All Ages School’s Chess Tournament where the best 5 chess players in each age group in Graaff-Reinet will be selected to compete in a triangular tournament against the other districts.

Junior Sport Results vs Herbert Hurd

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior sports teams faced off against a visiting Herbert Hurd side this past Saturday.

The ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—• ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 15-10. The ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—” ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ฏ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ gave it their all until the very last minute but, despite their impressive efforts, they narrowly lost to the Herbert Hurd side with a score of 17-24.

Switching gears to hockey, Union’s ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—— and ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—– teams displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship, although they both faced tough opponents and were narrowly defeated with a score of 0-1 in each match.

The ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—• and ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฏ๐—” hockey teams delivered outstanding performances, bringing home two victories for Union. The u/13B team dominated the field with an impressive 6-0 win, while the u/13A team showcased their skills and secured a solid 2-0 victory.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s rugby teams traveled to Woodridge College in Gqeberha this past Saturday for their annual rugby derby, a much-anticipated event following last year’s narrow defeat.

However, the second half saw a remarkable turnaround for Union’s 1st XV. They tightened their play, executing their structure and set pieces effectively. This newfound cohesion led to Union’s first points through a maul try. Momentum built, and Union scored three more tries. As the clock ticked down, Union found themselves trailing by just four points. Woodridge College was on the attack, putting immense pressure on the U16A defence. In a dramatic turn of events, we managed to regain possession of the ball. With determination and skill, they orchestrated a beautiful try. Josh Arends ran a brilliant line, crossing the try line to secure victory for the team. Similo Mvandaba sealed the deal with a drop kick conversion.

The final whistle blew, and the team celebrated their hard-fought win. It was a testament to their teamwork, resilience, and unwavering spirit.
