Today saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st hockey team participating in the regional leg of the 2024 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗚𝗜𝗥𝗟𝗦’ 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗘 contested at Kingswood College, South Africa in Makhanda.
Facing formidable opponents, the girls showcased their prowess right from the onset.
Their first encounter of the day against 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸 got them off to a good start with a 3-0 victory.
They squared off next against 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, the intense match resulting in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
The Union team then engaged in a riveting clash against 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱, with both sides showcasing their mettle, ultimately concluding in a deadlock, with the scoreboard frozen at 0-0.
In what turned out to be their last match of the day – a valiant effort against 𝗗𝗦𝗚 in the semi-finals – saw the girls narrowly missing out on a spot in the final, the match concluding with a close 2-1 scoreline in favour of DSG, the eventual champions.
