Art Club – Line Portraits

This week at 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗕, a wave of fun and creativity swept through as members delved into the fascinating realm of continuous line portraits. The unique twist? Swapping out the ‘sitter’ every 5 minutes added an unpredictable element to the artistic process.

𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘮𝘭𝘺, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦.

One of the most enchanting aspects of the experience was observing how each artist approached the task before them. Some started with bold strokes, capturing the essence of their subject in a few swift movements. Others took a more gradual approach, allowing the portrait to emerge organically with each connected line.

Despite the fast-paced nature of the exercise, 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 as participants honed their observation skills and delved deeper into the intricacies of the human form.

Chess Bootcamp

On Friday afternoon and evening, the Union Schools’ dedicated chess teachers organised an engaging 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗧𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗣 in the Tony Burrell Union.

The event brought together the junior and senior chess players of Union, providing them with 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙚.

Throughout the bootcamp, participants delved into various chess strategies and endgame techniques, guided by experienced instructors who shared their insights and expertise.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴’ 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴.

Senior Hockey vs Brandwag & Aliwal North – Results

The matches against Aliwal North were equally impressive, with the u/14A team winning 5-0, the u/16A team winning 3-0 and the 1st team delivering a spectacular 12-0 victory.

𝗜𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀, we’d also like to report on our senior hockey B-sides’ matches on Friday afternoon.

The teams travelled to Kariega, where they faced off against Hoërskool Brandwag.

The u/16B team drew 1-1, the u/14B team won 3-0, the third team played against Brandwag’s 2nd team, losing 6-0, while our 2nd team drew 1-1 against Brandwag’s 1st team.

𝙒𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙮 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

Junior Hockey vs Cradock – Results

Our junior hockey teams also had a stellar day on the field.

Against Cradock Primary, the u/7A team dominated with an 11-1 victory, and the u/7B team followed with a 2-0 win. Although the u/8A and u/8B teams narrowly lost with identical 3-4 scores, the u/9A team secured a 3-1 win, and the u/9B team held a 1-1 draw.

The u/10A and u/10B teams won their matches 4-0 and 2-0, respectively, while the u/13A, u/13B, u/13C, and u/13D teams also clinched victories, showcasing their skill and determination.

Junior Rugby vs Cradock – Results

This Saturday’s home derby against Cradock Primary School was another 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀.

The rugby matches against Cradock saw a mix of challenging encounters and remarkable victories.

While our u/7A (0-15), u/9A (0-21), u/9B (14-19), u/11A (15-26), u/11B (0-50) and u/13B (0-34) teams faced tough defeats, the u/7B team emerged victorious with a commanding 35-20 win.

A 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 goes to the u/13A rugby boys, who played with extraordinary heart and passion. Their dedication and teamwork were evident throughout the match and despite a narrow 12-14 loss, they showcased excellent skills and sportsmanship.

Senior Rugby vs Aliwal North – Results

The senior rugby teams delivered thrilling performances against Aliwal North on Saturday, 20 July 2024.

The u/14A team faced a tough 3-14 loss, while the u/15A and u/16A teams secured impressive victories, with scores of 17-12 and 50-5, respectively.

The 2nd XV narrowly lost 6-10, but the 1st XV team triumphed with a decisive 24-3 win.

Karoo Sub Union U/12 Rugby Team

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗧𝗢 Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s junior rugby players 𝗥𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘂𝗱é (𝗻𝗼. 𝟵), 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 (𝗻𝗼. 𝟱), 𝗟𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗯𝘂 (𝗻𝗼.𝟭𝟮) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝗶 (𝗻𝗼. 𝟭𝟵), who were selected for the Karoo Sub Union u/12 rugby team.
