Sport Results

Summer weather and happy learners made for a perfect 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔 for Union High School Grade 5 to 12 swimmers on Tuesday evening, 28 January.

The two houses entered into the spirit of the day and gave great support to all the swimmers and, after an evening of extraordinary effort, 𝘿𝙖𝙡𝙮 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧’𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨, with a total of 543 points, compared to Arnott’s 364.

The Interhouse Gala holds a special place in our hearts as it’s always an event that’s filled with smiles, friendly rivalry and a strong sense of camaraderie among all those participating. Last night’s event only served to – once again – remind us of how fortunate we all are to be a part of such an incredible school community.

𝘞𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘧𝘧 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵.

[ This year marked the third year that our Interhouse gala was held in our newly extended 25m swimming pool, resulting in the breaking of a total of 25 records. ]

𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 goes to the following swimmers for their exceptional performances:

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟮: Taylor Jacobs was the standout, securing an impressive six first-place finishes and setting four new records. Catie Davenport and Gemma Murray also deserve commendation for their contributions.

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟮: Uziah Willemse shone brightly, clinching three first-place finishes, two second places and one third. Notable performances were also delivered by Michael Maritz and Thomas Krige.

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟰 (𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿): Angelique Kyanda-Kaboza dominated this category with five first places, one second place and three new records. Lilly Hunter and Kari Stern also performed admirably.

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟰 (𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿): Dante Mills excelled with three first places, one second, one third and a new record to his name. Cayden Thompson also had a commendable showing.

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟰 (𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿): Miley Burger led the field with five first places and one second. Bella Hawkins, Kayla Norval, Micha Murray and Clea Clarke also made notable contributions.

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟰 (𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿): Aidan Ferreira and Jordan Maritz both delivered strong performances, with Aidan achieving two first places, a second, a third and a fourth, while Jordan secured two first places, a new record, a second and a third place. Murray Hope also performed well with a first and a second place finish.

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟲: Alyssa Trollip displayed dominance with four first places, four new records and two second places. Zoë Mills garnered multiple second places, a couple of firsts as well as a record, while Gerda Clarke consistently placed third.

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟲: Mark Lemke showcased his talent with multiple first-place finishes, including a fifth place.

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻: Misha Newton led this group with five first places and one second. Mecoli Vorster, Rebecca Copeman, Esethu Mabula, Sarah Jacobs and Tara Ferreira also made significant contributions.

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻: Ben Lemke stood out with six first places and five new records, while Daniel Marais consistently kept pace and Peter-Daniel Clegg and Kyle Liebenberg also delivered strong performances.

We are incredibly proud of the Union High School contingent that participated in this past Sunday’s sea mile in Gqeberha.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, with swimmers navigating the waters from Kings Beach to Hobie Beach.

𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘧𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦!

● Among the standout performances, Grade 7 learner 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗞𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮-𝗞𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘇𝗮 shone brightly, participating in the u/16 female half mile. Angelique won her category with an impressive time of 15:37.

● Union swim coach 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 also participated in the full Ladies Mile, finishing 20th overall with a time of 30:43.

● 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲 had a fantastic outing, completing the Ladies Mile in 26:41, which earned her a commendable 13th place overall.

● 𝗭𝗼ë 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 also made her mark, finishing in 11th place with a time of 26:28.

● In the Men’s Mile, 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲 swam to a time of 24:25, finishing 18th overall, while Union educators 𝗠𝗿 𝗝𝗣 𝗞𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗿 and 𝗠𝗿 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘂𝘀 completed the race in 37:20 and 35:47, securing 55th and 54th places respectively. 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 also participated, finishing in 35:46 and coming in 53rd overall.

● Not to be overlooked, Union mom 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲 participated in the Ladies Mile, finishing strong with a time of 25:40, earning her 8th overall position.

𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦!

On Monday morning, 27 January, the Union Preparatory School and Union High School junior department gathered to compete in the school’s annual 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗬.

𝘈 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵.

Congratulations to team 𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘 who retained the title at this year’s Junior Interhouse Athletics Day. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱, but in the end, it was Arnott’s total of 1300 points accumulated by their athletes, that secured them the win over Daly’s total of 1226!

𝗔 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:

● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟳 𝟲𝟬𝗺: Shiloh Phillips sprinted her way to victory with a time of 11.30 seconds.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟴 𝟲𝟬𝗺: Amy van Rensburg impressed everyone with her speed, finishing in 10.46 seconds.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟵 𝟲𝟬𝗺: Gabriella Lekas blazed through the track, clocking an impressive 10.13 seconds.
● 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟵 𝟲𝟬𝗺: Qazo Booi showed incredible talent, completing the race in 9.84 seconds.
● 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟯 𝟭𝟱𝟬𝟬𝗺: Lukhona Bulembu demonstrated his endurance with a remarkable time of 5:44:37.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟵 𝟴𝟬𝗺: Lusikelelo Mdlalana achieved a fantastic time of 13.71 seconds.
● 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟴 𝟴𝟬𝗺: Kainon Swartz stood out with his finish of 13.41 seconds.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟵 𝟴𝟬𝗺: Gabriella Lekas continued her winning streak with a record of 12.74 seconds.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟭 𝟴𝟬𝗺: Gemma Murray clocked a time of 12.65 seconds.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟯 𝟭𝟬𝟬𝗺: Angelique Kyanda Kaboza made her mark in a competitive field, setting a new time of 14,44s.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟯 𝟴𝟬𝟬𝗺: Hayley Krige finished strong with a time of 3:09:53.
● 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟯 𝟴𝟬𝟬𝗺: Lukhona Bulembu again showcased his prowess with a time of 2:42:19.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟮 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁: Lisa McEwan threw an impressive 7.31m.
● 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝘂/𝟭𝟭 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗺𝗽: Leah Abader achieved a height of 1.15m, showcasing her remarkable jumping ability.

The Junior Department extends its grateful 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to all the parents who volunteered to help on the day. It is simply not possible to host an event such as this without their help.

There was also a large number of learners assisting at the various events on the day, their contribution to the success of the day has not gone unnoticed.

Union High School hosted its annual Founders’ Weekend cricket matches today, Saturday, 24 January, featuring the school’s 1st, 2nd and u/15A teams against the Old Boys.

These matches are more than just a showcase of talent on the field; they also serve as 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, both during the games and in the camaraderie that follows.

Following an exciting day of cricket, a prize-giving ceremony was held in the Tony Burrell Union, where several trophies were awarded to outstanding players:

This past Wednesday morning, 22 January, saw the official start of Union High School’s year-long Interhouse competition, with the much-anticipated 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗗𝗔𝗬.

𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘦𝘵, 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘴 8 𝘵𝘰 12 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥.

The Arnott and Daly athletes showcased their talents in numbers, running, jumping and throwing with an enthusiasm that was contagious.

After a sun-soaked day of competition, they triumphantly seized the win with a final score of 584 to 561, breaking Arnott’s impressive winning streak of more than 10 years!

The following athletes must be commended on their 𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦:

𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀:
• 𝗫𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼𝘄 (u/19): Dominated the field with 1st place finishes in the 100m, High Jump and Long Jump, along with 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 400m.
• 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 (u/19): Showcased his versatility, clinching 1st in the 400m and 200m, and securing 2nd in both the 100m and High Jump.
• 𝗞𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 (u/19): Excelled in the discus and 1500m with 1st place finishes, while also taking 2nd in the Shot Put.
• 𝗝𝗮𝘆𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗢𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗮𝗹 (u/19): Shone in the Shot Put and Javelin, achieving 1st place in both and 3rd in the discus.
• 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗶 (u/17): A champion in the 100m, 400m and 200m, with a commendable 2nd in the High Jump and 5th in the Long Jump.
• 𝗤𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗻 (u/17): Took 1st in both the High Jump and Long Jump, while also claiming 3rd in the 1500m and 400m.
• 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘇 (u/15): Gained recognition with 1st in the Shot Put and 200m, plus 2nd in the 100m and High Jump.
• Brothers, 𝗕𝗲𝗻 (u/17) and 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 (u/15) 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲, claimed 1st places in exactly the same events in their respective age groups – the 800m, 1500m and 3000m).

𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀:
• 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗶 𝗞𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘇𝗺𝗮𝗻 (u/19): Dominated the Shot Put and Javelin, securing 1st place in both events.
• 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗯𝘀 (u/19): Claimed two first places, in the 3000m and 1500m, respectively.
• 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 (u/17): Excelled in the Shot Put and Discus, finishing 1st in both, and claimed 3rd in the 200m and 800m.
• 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲 (u/17): Finished strong with 1st in the 100m and 200m and 2nd in the High Jump.
• 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻 (u/17): Showed her endurance and strength, clinching 1st in the 800m, 1500m and Shot Put.
• 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 (u/15): A standout with a 1st place in both the High Jump and Long Jump and 3rd in the 100m.

𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, as recognised by Athletics South Africa scoring, included Demi Kretzman’s impressive throw of 7.24m in the u/19 Shot Put. The u/15 100m race was a nail-biter, featuring a photo finish with Ntando Mtshali, Anna-Rose de Wet and Miley Burger clocking times of 14.84s, 14.85s, and 14.86s respectively.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, with Liso Booi finishing the u/17 100m in 11.59 seconds, Jayden Odendaal achieving a distance of 11.20m in the u/19 Shot Put, Josh Arends timing 11.69 seconds in the u/17 100m and Peter-Daniel Clegg reaching a distance of 10.60m in the u/17 Shot Put.
