Sarah Baartman Chess Trials

On Saturday, 15 February, Union High School hosting the first round of the 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗕𝗮𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀.

This event has attracted 130 chess players, ranging from u/10 to Open categories, from across the district.

Among the competitors are 28 talented young Unionites who are ready to showcase their skills and represent their school.

Representing your school is always a major honour, but reaching the milestone of 50 first team caps is something that does not come around too often.

That being said, two members of the Union High School’s 1st cricket team had the honour this morning of taking the field in their 50th match for their school!

Prior to their encounter against Muir College Boys’ High School, Kariega on Saturday, 15 February, 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝘂𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗿 and 𝗬𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗮 were presented with their official 50th cap by Headmaster, Mr William Pringle.

Senior Cricket vs Muir College

In an exciting day of cricket, Union High School’s senior cricketers faced off against Muir College Boys’ High School, Kariega today, Saturday, 15 February.

While the 2nd XI traveled to Kariega for their match, both the 1st XI and the u/15As took the field at home.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to the 1st XI who secured a resounding victory by 100 runs.

Meanwhile, the 2nd XI also came away with a victory by 33 runs against their opponents in Kariega.

Not to be overshadowed, the u/15As also claimed a win by 3 wickets.

Junior Cricket Tour To Bloemfontein – Results

As the sun shines brightly over Bloemfontein this week, our 𝗨𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝟭𝟭𝗔 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠𝗦 are facing off against some of the top cricketing schools in the region: Grey College, Willem Postma and St Andrews’ School.

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 4-𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵.

The teams are participating in a series of matches that are sure to test their mettle and sportsmanship. With a mixture of T20, 30-over and 40-over formats on the schedule, our players will have the chance to demonstrate their versatility and adaptability on the field.

RESULTS

U11A vs Grey College
Union fought hard but lost to Grey College, gaining valuable experience for future matches.

U11A vs Willem Postma
Union fell short chasing 185, losing the match but showing determination.

Union vs St Andrews (Friday)
St Andrews set 153, and Union scored 117, despite good bowling from Mark Copeman (4-22).

Union vs St Andrews (Saturday)
Union posted 96 runs; despite strong bowling from Copeman (3-12) and McEwan (2-20), St Andrews chased it down to win by 4 wickets.

U/13A 

Vs Grey Bloem

Union bowled first, conceding 174-3, with Grant Murray taking 2 wickets. In reply, Union managed 86-9, with Josh Kingwill top-scoring on 23.

Vs Willem Postma
Union won by 18 runs. Batting first, they posted 158 all out, with Dante Mills scoring 29. Grant Murray (4-31) led the bowling, and Willem Postma were bowled out for 140.

Vs St Andrews Bloem
Union won by 17 runs. Batting first, they scored 131, with Josh Kingwill making 25. St Andrews were restricted to 114, with Hendricks, Murray, and Kingwill each taking 2 wickets.

Vs St Andrews
St Andrews scored 102-6, with Cayden Thompson and Nathaneal Phillips taking 2 wickets each. Union were bowled out for 37, losing by 65 runs.

Summary
U/13A won 2 out of 4 games against tough competition.

While on tour in Bloemfontein, Union High School and Union Preparatory School’s young cricketers had the privilege of participating in a training session at St Andrew’s School’s 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 in Bloemfontein.

The boys were joined by rugby players from the 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗵𝘀, athletes from the 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗼 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 soccer team and cricketers from the 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀.
