Premier Hockey Cup Final

There was much excitement among the members of the 𝗞𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 hockey team, after they walked off the AstroTurf on Wednesday afternoon, 10 September, as the very first victors of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet‘s 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗣 (an internal competition).

The team – captained by Caytah-Leigh Koeberg and Soso Mroro – put forth a stellar effort all round to remain the only unbeaten team during the tournament. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 the captains and their respective team members, Sarah Jacobs, Lisa Menos, Katelyn Trollip, Amy Waddelow, Ambesiwe Tokwe, Alex Short, Jade Slater, Elizabeth Houseman, Sinalo Khali, Zoë Mills, Brogan Koeberg, Sesethu Kotishini, Bukhobenkosi Nomatye, Ashley Shell and goalie Joy Merifield.

Hockey Off-Season Training Squad

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗧𝗢 the following hockey players, who, based on their performance during Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s recent Premier Hockey Cup, were selected to participate in an off-season hockey training programme with Union’s 1st team hockey coach, Mr Calvin Beck.

Pearson Cricket Festival

Hoërskool Pearson High School in Gqeberha are set to host their annual 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 as of today, Thursday, 8 September.
The 2022 edition will once again see 20 of the top cricket-playing schools in the province in action, including Union High School.

• Today at 13:30, Union will face Otto du Plessis in a T20 match, on Friday they will face Victoria Park in a Time Format match and on Saturday they will be taking on Westering in a 50-over match.

EP Rugby Selection

𝗞𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵 and 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to junior rugby players, 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻 and 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵, on being included in the EP rugby sides for two upcoming tournaments.
𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 will represent the Eastern Province u/12 side at the Southern Regional Tournament being played from 29 September to 1 October in Riversdale, while 𝗞𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘂 will represent the province as part of the u/13 EP Sevens squad at the Earl Hill Coastal Sevens Tournament being contested on 16 and 17 September in Kareedouw.

Premier Hockey Cup Results

The first leg of Union’s 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗣 was contested at the Union High School, Graaff-Reinet AstroTurf this afternoon, Monday, 5 September, and saw the Wolves take on the Bulldogs to draw 1-all and the Renegades face off against the Knights, with the Knights claiming a 4 – 2 victory.
Day 2 of Union’s 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗣 was another competitive affair, with both matches being tightly contested.
𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the Renegades who beat the Bulldogs 3 – 0 and the Knights, who remain unbeaten, having won their match against the Wolves 3 – 2.
• Day 3 (Wednesday, 7 September) will see the Bulldogs take on the Knights (14:00 – 15:00) and the Renegades face off against the Wolves (15:00 – 16:00).

STEM Fields Promotion by US

On Tuesday morning, 6 September, a group of postgraduate physics students from Stellenbosch University – backed by the professional and scientific bodies of Optica, SPIE and NITheCS – visited Union High School, Graaff-Reinet as part of an outreach programme to promote an interest in STEM fields (i.e. science, technology, engineering and mathematics) among high school learners.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟭 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – applicable to the school curriculum – which covered a wide range of scientific topics, such as optics, momentum, electricity and electromagnetic induction, to name but a few.
The learners enjoyed the session tremendously and now have a much better understanding of the study and career opportunities that are available to students of math and science.

There is cause for much excitement at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet this week, as our inaugural 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗨𝗣 – an internal competition – takes centre stage!

The teams have been selected and 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟰:𝟬𝟬 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟱 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 at the UHS AstroTurf – spectators are welcome!

Teams were compiled by way of a draw from a list of more than 60 of our hockey players, from u/13A level to senior 1st team level, who will battle it out to be crowned the first ever victors of this exciting competition!

This tournament is a first of its kind for Union, and sees teams comprised of Union’s hockey talent from junior level through to senior level face off against each other for top honours in a 3-day long round robin tournament.
Union’s Head of Hockey, Mr Calvin Beck, said, “We are very excited to host this event. We hope that this tournament will create an environment and atmosphere where all of Union’s hockey players feel welcome and get an opportunity to bond and get to know one another across all age groups. We hope the experience will be one our players will enjoy and look forward to seeing the bonds created between the players as the younger ones benefit from the seniors’ mentoring.”

Angora MTB Classic

Union was well represented at this past weekend’s Angora MTB Classic in Jansenville 💪
𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Union educator 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗿, who successfully completed the 21km half marathon on Sunday, 4 September, crossing the finish line as the second lady home. She is seen here with Union learners, 𝗝𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘇 and 𝗕𝗲𝗻 and 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗸𝗲 who each did the 5km run!

Rising Stars Tennis Tournament

On Sunday, 4 September, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet welcomed tennis players from Kingswood, St Andrew’s College, Hoër Volkskool and Nico Malan to our campus for the Sarah Baartman leg of the national 𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧.
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙪/16 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙖𝙧𝙚: (boys) Josh Neill, Angus McLaggen, Peter-Daniel Clegg, Stephan Vorster, (girls) Tara Ferreira, Catah-Leigh Koeberg, Kenza Neill and Charlize Vorster.
Congratulations to our girls’ team, who along with Kingswood, will represent the district in the next round on 1 and 2 October in East London. Congratulations are also extended to the teams from St Andrew’s College and Nico Malan who will represent the district in the boys’ section.

Senior Tennis Results

On Monday last week, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st boys and girls senior tennis teams played a match against Cradock, narrowly losing by 13 matches to 11.
This past weekend, the tennis players competed in the 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗢 𝗪𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 in Middelburg, where our Top 4 boys and girls faced very strong opposition.
We are pleased that they reversed last week’s result against Cradock, beating them by 33 games to 31.
Another fine result was a narrow defeat by Kingswood, by the same margin.
Union’s second tennis team, did their school proud by winning the B section of the tournament – they defeated Middelburg, Aliwal North and Cradock.
