“𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴.”- 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘁

In a bid to inspire our learners to write more poetry, the ‘𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘃𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀’ 𝗽𝗼𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 was introduced in 2021.

Names were removed from 15 entries and a panel judged the poems which resulted in Brigette Oelofsen, Vivian McEwan and Na’eem Mahomed being chosen as winners.

𝙄𝙣 2022, 𝙬𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙣𝙤 𝙛𝙚𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 65 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨!

Ten poems were shortlisted and these poets were invited to an evening of poetry and pizza at the home of Union educator, Mrs Bronwen Langmead. The topics of the poems ranged from descriptions of a special pet, to the emotional journey between a father and son.

𝘈𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵, 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘧𝘧. 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮-𝘴𝘰𝘥𝘢 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥-𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨.

The poems “We real cool” and “Nothing Gold can Stay” were also discussed and the group learned of the strength of a few, powerful, carefully chosen words.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to the 2022 winners, who emerged as:

Our Interact Club recently asked for your help in collecting toiletries and other necessities for their 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗘𝗕𝗢𝗫 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘, and you delivered!

Earlier today, Wednesday, 16 November, all donations received were gifted to a local non-profit organisation, Siya Phambili.

Please take note that the Annual General Meeting, at which the 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦’ 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗕𝗨𝗗𝗚𝗘𝗧 will be presented to parents, will be held on Monday evening, 14 November, in the Tony Burrell Union.

𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴/𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘧 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦.

Grade 8 learner 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 participated in a competitive endurance ride on Waterlea Farm in the Hofmeyr district this past weekend (Friday and Saturday, 4 and 5 November).

Tristan did well to complete the 80km course on Friday successfully and finished strong by winning the 40km course on Saturday with a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes (averaging 21km an hour).

On Thursday evening, 20 October, the Class of 2022 was officially inducted into the ranks of the Old Unionite Association (OUA).

This annual event, where the Grade 12s are presented with their OUA membership cards, sees all the matrics gather for what might most-likely be one of the very last times they will be spending time together socially as a class.

𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸, 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺.

The Grade 12s were welcomed by Headmaster Mr William Pringle, 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙜𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙊𝙡𝙙 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙈𝙧 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝙁𝙞𝙣𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣 (𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝘽𝙤𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 1999).

Mr Finlaison shared with the learners some special words of wisdom, calling on them to uphold the high moral standards the school stands for and encouraging them to always support and return to their Alma Mater and to remember the values instilled in them during their school years at the Union Schools.

The event culminated in each Grade 12 learner receiving a gift from the Old Unionite Association and enjoying some refreshments.
