Junior Cricket vs Queen’s Primary – Results

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s u/13A cricket team who started their season off with a bang in a T20 against Queen’s College Boys’ Primary School this afternoon.

The Union side won the toss and elected to bowl first. The bowlers put on an excellent performance, restricting Queen’s to 103 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 and 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 each claimed a wicket, while 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘇𝗼 contributed with a brilliant run out.

Union’s batting was steady, with 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 scoring 28 and 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 adding 27 runs. Union chased down the target in the final over, securing a victory by 5 wickets.

Poles Coming Down For Cricket Season

Today marks an exciting transition at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet as we usher in the cricket season, with the rugby posts having been taken down.

Cricket Results – Pearson Festival

Hoërskool Pearson High School in Gqeberha hosted its 16th annual 𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 over the past weekend.

The 2024 edition once again saw some of the top cricket-playing schools in the province in action.

1st T20 Match:

Venue: Old Gray (due to weather conditions)
Teams: Union High School vs Wynburg High School
Wynburg High School batted first and scored 177 runs.
Union High School fell short in their chase, scoring 122 runs, resulting in a loss by 50 runs.
Notable Performances:
- Leander Kraai: Quick 30 off 21 balls
- Leander Kraai also bowled 4 overs, taking 2 wickets for 24 runs.

2nd T20 Match:

Teams: Despatch vs Union High School
Despatch won the toss and chose to bat first, scoring 170 runs in their 20 overs.
Union High School scored 163 runs in their innings, falling short by 7 runs.
Result: Despatch won by 7 runs.

Declaration Game:

Venue: Kariega
Teams: Union High School vs Brandwag Hoer Skool
Brandwag won the toss and sent Union High School in to bat first. Union scored 112-10 and 88-5.
Brandwag chased down the target with scores of 164-9 and 40-0.
Result: Brandwag won by 5 wickets using 5-day test rules.
Notable Performance: Shaakir scored 58 runs, supported by Richard Murray.

50 Over Game:

Teams: Union High School vs Otto Du Plessis
Union High School won the toss and chose to bowl. They bowled Otto Du Plessis out for 157 runs.
Trystan Hullaman delivered an impressive 5-wicket haul.
Result: Otto Du Plessis won by 26 runs.

Art Club: Abstract Expression

On Monday afternoon, 26 August, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗕 enjoyed a creative outing at the Jan Rupert Art Centre, participating in an enriching workshop on Abstract Expression hosted by the Rupert Foundation.

After an insightful debriefing on the current exhibition, each participant was provided with a canvas, vibrant paints and a variety of materials to unleash their creativity. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘫𝘰𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘺, 𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘴.

SASMT Annual Music Competition

Congratulations to our talented senior music students, 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂 (Grade 9) and 𝗝𝗼𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 (Grade 12), for their outstanding performances in the 2024 SASMT Annual Music Competition held in Gqeberha this past weekend.

Liso showcased his skills on Friday, August 23, competing in the High School Music Grade 4 – 6 categories with a captivating rendition of “𝘍𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢” by A. Scarlatti.

On Saturday, August 24, Joy took the stage in the High School Music Grade 7 and up category, impressing the audience with her performance of “𝘓𝘢 𝘗𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘘𝘶𝘦 𝘓𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦” by C. Debussy. Both learners were evaluated by the esteemed Dr. Mariechen Meyer, a dedicated professional double bassist.

𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙚𝙣𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙅𝙤𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘.

Ms Zelda Oosthuizen, their music educator, remarked on the exceptional way their performances brought together rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, texture, timbre and structure. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.

Camdeboo Eisteddfod 2024

The Welsh word ‘𝗘𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗𝗗𝗙𝗢𝗗’ is formed from the Welsh morphemes: eistedd – meaning ‘sit’ and fod – meaning ‘be’ – culminating in the definition, “sitting together”.

As strange as this sounds, when one considers that the earliest form of the eisteddfod was a competitive meeting between bards and minstrels, it does make perfect sense! In centuries gone by, the winner was chosen by a noble or royal patron.

The vision of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s Cultural Department is 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰, 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱. This year’s Camdeboo Eisteddfod was an astonishing celebration of exactly that.

The Eisteddfod took place over three busy days. An increase in entries this year led to logistical and administrative challenges, but thanks to an online entry platform using Google Forms and an extensive set of guidelines, the programme was effectively streamlined.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 – 𝟭𝟰, 𝟭𝟱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟲 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 – 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘇𝘇 with busloads of choirs dressed in stunning regalia arriving from other schools; children carrying sheet music and instruments, smaller children waiting anxiously to read their poems or play their pieces, gorgeous artworks and photos on display; duos and trios singing in harmony; lines being practiced in quiet places; moms quickly checking if their dancers had lipstick on; folk from the community relaxing in the audience surrounded by music for a few hours; props being shuffled onto stage; bats removed from the curtains to the squeals of ballerinas; tears when certificates weren’t always gold; jubilation when a ‘cum laude’ was awarded and the general endorphin-filled atmosphere that is associated with the performing arts.

𝘐𝘵 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘌𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘧𝘰𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴.

Qualified adjudicators were carefully chosen: Lynne Gouws -music, voice, choral and instrumental; Paula Kingwill – drama; Rebecca Langmead – art and photography; Bronwynne Kingwill – dance and Louise Vorster – creative writing.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 and expertise under challenging circumstances and exhausting time constraints.

As each item was performed – be it a song, piano piece, dance or prose – it was immediately judged, a comment written and a certificate completed. This could not have happened without the invaluable assistance of Union moms, Marie-Louise Oosthuizen and Marsha Bouwer.

Mrs Sharon Krige printed hundreds of certificates and the technical assistance of Johan du Plessis and Muhamad Ahmed were also greatly appreciated. The Eisteddfod committee is especially grateful to Mr Donald Kingwill and his team who really went beyond the call of duty from dawn until dusk, fetching, cleaning, carrying and re-arranging during a very busy week.

As the Camdeboo Eisteddfod drew to a close late on the Friday afternoon, the organisers (𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚) consisting of Ms Zelda Oosthuizen, Mrs Sanette Brink, Mrs Tracy-Lee Chutu and Mrs Bronwen Langmead breathed a collective sigh of satisfaction that it had been a resounding success for the Cultural Department of Union.

With just 𝟰𝟰 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 until the highly anticipated 2024 edition of Tri The Karoo, excitement is building!

Set to take place on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟮 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿, at the beautiful Union Schools’ campus, this event is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend full of fun, competition and community spirit.

The festivities will begin on 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝟭𝟳:𝟬𝟬 with a fun 5km 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗻. This event is the perfect way to kick off an exciting weekend. The start and finishing point will be located at Union High School, Graaff-Reinet, making it accessible for everyone! Whether you’re an athlete or simply looking for a fun outing, this event welcomes all. Bring your kids, your dogs and even your prams as we splash some colour on the weekend!

Following the Colour Run, join us for a delicious 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 hosted by the Old Unionite Association at the Tony Burrell Union clubhouse.

Bright and early on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, the action kicks off with four exciting races:

While the athletes are competing, the Union Schools’ campus will transform into a lively hub featuring the 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀’ 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁. With a variety of stalls, spectators will have plenty to explore and enjoy throughout the day.

As the sun sets, the festivities continue with the 𝗧𝗿𝗶 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹, hosted by the Graaff-Reinet Club. Get ready for an incredible evening filled with fun, music and celebration as 𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗻 takes the stage! The Saturday Night Social will also feature the 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 for the Olympic and Sprint Races – it’s completely open to the public, so don’t miss out!

Congratulations, Mia & Carlie

We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of Union High School, Graaff-Reinet Grade 5 learners, Mia Labuscagne and Carlie George, who recently completed their very first Classical Debut piano exam with RSL!

𝘉𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘭𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴, 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 – 𝘔𝘪𝘢 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 93% 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵 91%.

Mia’s performance was described by the examiner as outstanding, with the remark that “no significant areas of improvement were identified in this excellent graded certificate.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁!

Carlie’s performance was equally impressive, receiving high praise for her “confident and assured performance throughout.” The examiner noted that she effortlessly met both the technical and stylistic demands of the repertoire!

Senior Tennis – Marco Wasserman Tournament

This past weekend saw Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s senior tennis players, 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲, 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗴, 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲, 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆, 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗡𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 and 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮, participating in the annual Marco Wasserman tennis tournament, contested in Middelburg.

Over the course of the two days, the players competed in a Round Robin doubles and mixed doubles format in the competition’s A-League.

Despite facing tough competition and very windy conditions, the Union learners performed exceptionally well, 𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙙, 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙗𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙬𝙖𝙜.

They left the tournament having gained valuable insights from the experience.

𝘈𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳𝘴’ 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘤𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘥.
