An Exciting Future For Union

The Union High School Governing Body is pleased to announce that it will soon begin construction of a 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚-𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢 𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 to the Middle School on the corner of Donkin and Caledon Street.

Once completed, this exciting development will provide 179 square metres in additional classroom space.

Construction is expected to begin within the next couple of months and to be completed and ready for use at the start of the 2023 academic year.

The new building will connect to the current Middle School and will feature modern classrooms, covered patios on the front and side of the building and contemporary breakout spaces.

While the overall design of the new building will “fit in” with the existing historic setting, the classrooms itself will consist of innovative learning spaces that aligns with the pedagogical vision of the 21st century. Think beautiful spaces that are light, airy, fitted with the latest technology and that make learners feel good to be at school.

Union High School invites all parents, learners aged 16 and over, and members of the Union community to 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗕𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗗 at the SANBS blood drive being held on Tuesday afternoon, 15 February, between 13:30 and 18:00 in the Tony Burrell Union.

Stoep Tasting 2022

Situated in the heart of Graaff-Reinet against a magnificent mountain backdrop, 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙗𝙮 𝘼𝙧𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙩 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚, one of the Union High School’s boarding establishments, has opened its doors to accommodate visitors to town during the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗘𝗣 𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 festivities (27 to 29 May 2022).

𝘛𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦, 𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘵, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘑𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘈𝘱𝘱 𝘢𝘵 082 927 0282 𝘰𝘳 𝘷𝘪𝘢 𝘦-𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘵 𝘫𝘦𝘯𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦@𝘨𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮.

Junior Tennis vs Gill Primary

On Wednesday afternoon, 9 February, 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡’𝙨 𝙏𝙤𝙥 4 𝙅𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙧 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨’ 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙗𝙤𝙮𝙨’ 𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙨 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙚𝙧𝙨 matched-up against a visiting Gill Primary side.

It was a wonderful afternoon for our players and we were very impressed by the sportsmanship and camaraderie shown by all those participating.

Union won the fixture overall by 12 matches to 0.

Interhouse Gala

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆, 𝗦𝗲𝘁, 𝗦𝗪𝗜𝗠!

On Wednesday evening, 9 February, Union High School’s much-anticipated 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗚𝗔𝗟𝗔 was held in perfect conditions.

Competition between the two houses was keen throughout the evening, and the air was filled with excitement and spirit as the swimmers cheered for their respective houses and peers.

At the end of the evening, 𝘿𝙖𝙡𝙮 𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙮 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙣, with 490 points to Arnott’s 476.

There were events for swimmers from u/12 through to Open and it was wonderful to see so many swimmers participating.

The open boys’ and girls’ events produced some exciting finishes which were lovely to watch.

The 2022 matrics ended the gala off on a high note with a fun relay.

Well done to all the swimmers who took to the water (especially those who had to find their costumes at the bottom of their cupboards), as well as to the staff for all their hard work.

Introduction To Robotics

Coding is becoming a vitally important skill in the 21st century and having the fundamental knowledge will help a child in any field of study.

It is, therefore, with great excitement that we announce that Union High School held its very first Robotics lesson today!

This 𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 saw a select few learners being introduced to this exciting subject.

The enthusiasm of the learners was tangible as they played around with basic coding languages and studied the principles of coding.

Union extends its grateful 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗦 to the Care for Education Foundation whose donation of several Mindstorm EV3 robotic kits have made this a possibility. We also extend our thanks to the Union educators who have made themselves available to study and, in turn, teach our learners all about Robotics.

Lastly, we’d also like to thank Mr Ross Hulleman for his willingness to assist with the lessons.

Junior Interschools Athletics

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀

The annual 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟𝗦 𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗦 event between the Union Schools and Laer Volkskool was held this afternoon, Tuesday, 8 February.

The meet was hosted by Union with various items such as long jump, high jump, shot put, sprints, middle-distance running and relays taking place on Union High School’s sports grounds.

On the one hand, it was a fierce, gruelling battle with Volkskool and Union’s best young athletes having to dig deep in order to put on their best performances for the crowd and the schools they represent.

On the other hand, it was 𝙖 𝙟𝙤𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 and the chance for learners to see their hard work and talents come into fruition on the field.

The tremendous effort, attitude and willingness of the learners – from both schools – were great to see and created such a sense of fun, and a spirit of great sportsmanship on the day.

Congratulations to all the athletes involved for their efforts and participation – we could well have witnessed some budding athletic stars of the future!

2022 RCL Elected

Union High School recently elected class representatives as well as a new Representative Council of Learners (RCL).

The 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝘾𝙇 𝙖𝙧𝙚, 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨, 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚: kind, caring and sensitive to the needs of others; hard-working and motivated to bring about positive change in their environment; honest, trustworthy and dependable; but, most of all, proud of their school and the opportunity to serve others.
