Snr Cricket Results vs Daniel Pienaar

UHS take on DP in CSA T20 quarter-finals

On Saturday, 15 February, Union High School’s 1st XI travelled to Uitenhage to play against the Daniël Pienaar Technical High School in the quarter-finals of the CSA T20 competition.

Daniël Pienaar won the toss and elected to bat first.

Union’s bowlers struggled to settle with consistent line and lengths, which allowed the Daniël Pienaar players to score freely.

Union, however, managed to finally tighten things up and started taking regular wickets, slowing the run rate down and eventually restricting Daniël Pienaar to 96 in their allotted 20 overs after them having scored 61 in their first 10 overs.

Union’s best bowlers were Brett Amsterdam (3 for 6 in 4 overs), Jarrod Naudé (2 for 17 in 4 overs) and Josh Calitz (2 for 13 in 2 overs).

Union then went in to bat and soon found themselves standing at 19 for 4.

After being in a tough position, the innings continued in a stop-start manner with the Union batsmen struggling to get going.

Thanks to some valiant efforts by the middle to lower-order batsmen, Union managed to get back in the game and soon found themselves in a position where they could possibly win the game.

Unfortunately, it was a little too late and Union ended up 6 runs short of their target.

Union’s best batsmen were James Pringle (24), Sisipho Arnols (14) and Josh Calitz (14).

Union lost the match by 6 runs.

• Union’s 2nd XI also faced Daniël Pienaar on Saturday.

Daniël Pienaar won the toss and elected to bat. They were bowled out for 143 in the 25th over.

Union’s best bowlers were Daniel Nell (3 for 21) and Hlakaniphe Skepe (3 for 22).

Union then had good opening partnerships of 56 and 54.

Union’s top scorers were Rogan Odendaal (56), Hlakaniphe Skepe (21), Matthew Hesselink (14) and Dylan Kriel (19 not out).

Union passed Daniël Pienaar’s score in the 34th over to win the match by 3 wickets.

Eco Club Celebrates Recent Rains

The members of Union High School’s Eco Club visited the Valley Of Desolation on Friday afternoon, 14 February, where they were amazed to see how this drought-stricken area’s plant life has recovered since the recent rains.

It was also a beautiful sight for all to see the Nqweba Dam with some water in it again after having been dry for almost a year and, as always, the view of the town set against the timeless backdrop of the vast plains of the Camdeboo was a treat for all the learners.

Valentine’s Day @ UHS

Oh, we’re definitely feeling the love today 😍

Union High School’s MF committee members worked tirelessly this Valentine’s Day to raise funds for the 2020 Matric Farewell.

We’re thrilled to report that the school’s learners really supported their Valentine’s Day efforts, with children from every grade buying roses and cupcakes for the ones they admire.

Chess Trials

The first round of the trials to select the Chris Hani District’s chess team for 2020 was held on Monday afternoon, 10 February.

This set of matches saw 21 schools participating and took the format of an individual Swiss Open chess tournament.

110 entrants battled it out in the Union High School hall in Graaff-Reinet, while a further 80 players pitted their skills against one another at Marlow Agricultural High School in Cradock.

The chess tournament was keenly contested by players from start to finish and saw a wave of promising young talent emerge.

(The second round of the trials will be held in March and the third soon thereafter, after which the the top players will be invited to a closed tournament in August, where the final selection will be made for the team that will represent the district at the South African Junior Chess Championship to be held in Johannesburg in early January 2021.

Union extends its thanks to all those who assisted in making the tournament a success – the section controllers, arbiters and all those who assisted in the many smalls tasks on the day.

Gr 8 Graffiti

The first few weeks of Grade 8 can be overwhelming, exciting, daunting and ‘cool’ all at once!

In Arts and Culture, the Grade 8s studied graffiti and lettering and then had to choose a word which best described their first few weeks at Union.

They worked really hard and produced magnificent results!

Operation ‘Love Sandwiches’ Continue

It was the Grade 10s turn on Wednesday morning, 12 February, to try and best the other grades in the ‘Love Sandwiches’ project recently initiated by the school’s Interact Club.

[This ongoing project sees the learners of the respective grades at Union compete to see who can make the most sandwiches in aid of this initiative.]

Armed with all their sandwich-making supplies, the three Grade 10 classes, led by their class teachers Miss Jacqui Jones, Mr Erwin Ittershagen-Strauss and Mrs Bronwen Langmead, managed to set a new record – a whopping 487 sandwiches!

The sandwiches were delivered later on that afternoon to the Midlands Hospital, the CMR and the soup kitchen at the East Street Congregational Church.
