Philosophy Club

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯
A new club was created at Union High School this year – and it’s definitely making people think.
The 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 will see participants getting together every two weeks to discuss numerous thought-provoking topics, that vary from the metaphysical to the pragmatic, including, but not limited to, morals, perception, love, emotions and different views of reality.
The club was created by Grade 12 learners, Max Wright and James Rose-Innes, who were inspired by a recent donation of a ‘THINK Table’ to the school by Old Unionite, Mr Adrian Arnott.
The Philosophy Club’s founders, Grade 12 learners James Rose-Innes and Max Wright.
Mr Arnott gifted the school with this extraordinary thought-provoking table in order to promote a culture of ‘deeper thinking’ at the school.
The idea behind it certainly took root and led to these two matric learners, who found the idea of developing often unvoiced ideas discovered in other classes too appealing to be ignored, establishing a forum for the free expression of thought and speech, where learners can have fun while having the space to explore ideas.
At its inaugural meeting on Tuesday afternoon, 9 March, it already boasted 14 members who delved right into the first topic up for discussion – a classic thought experiment known as the trolley dilemma, developed by philosopher Philippa Foot in 1967.
The trolley dilemma is a thought experiment about a fictional scenario in which an onlooker has the choice to save 5 people in danger of being hit by a trolley, by diverting the trolley to kill just 1 person. The term is often used more loosely with regard to any choice that seemingly has a trade-off between what is good and what sacrifices are “acceptable,” if at all.
The philosophical discussion that ensued generated a wealth of rich and meaningful conversation among the learners present and allowed the learners to think through the consequences of an action and consider whether its moral value is determined solely by its outcome.
Any learners that are interested in expanding their perspectives, joining in conversations that challenge opinions and sharing their insights are encouraged to attend the Club’s next meeting on Tuesday evening, 23 March, at 17:00 in the Union High School Hall.

Academic Awards

We would like to take this opportunity to honour learners in each respective grade who had attained high academic successes during the course of last year.
We would like to congratulate these learners – not simply on their high achievement in academics, as important as that is – but on their deep and genuine engagement in learning and an eagerness to stretch and challenge themselves to get the most out of their education at Union.
• These awards are calculated on learners’ November 2020 results.
• These Grade 6 to 8 learners identified here, will be awarded academic bars, the Grade 9 and 10 learners academic ties and the Grade 11 and 12 learners Half and Full Colours.

Art Club Outing To Aberdeen

Discovering kiln-fused glass

Yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 24 October) Union High School’s Art Club travelled to Aberdeen for their final outing of the year.  Once there, they visited the studio of local artists Marguerite Benecke.  Mrs Benecke is a contemporary warm glass artist, who creates paintings and textures in glass.

The group was treated to a tour of her gallery and her studio where she showed them some of the many techniques she has mastered over the years.  She graciously answered all of their questions, of which there were many, leaving the learners in awe of what she can produce using glass, enamel paint and a massive kiln!

Union extends its thanks to Mrs Benecke for her time, as well as her generosity!

Learner Babalwa Lewis was the lucky recipient of a beautiful piece of art signed by the artist.

Senior Prizegiving 2019

Union High School’s annual Senior Prizegiving Ceremony, held on Friday evening, 11 October, was once again a wonderful occasion for the Union learners, their families, members of the school community and staff to come together to celebrate the individual and collective achievements of Union’s learners in all areas of school life.

As the school’s pianists delivered a set of special performances, parents took their seats quietly and expectantly.

Listening to “Shallow” from the movie ‘A Star is Born’ played by Brigette Oelofsen, John Lennon and Paul McCarthy’s “Let it Be” played by Anna Pringle, “Joueur de Harpe” played by Caitrin Spence and “Comptine d’un autie ètrè” played by Jamie Jaftha, they waited to celebrate these moments of achievement with their children.

The senior choir then treated the audience to a performance of “Gaudeamus Igitur” while the members of staff entered the hall and took their seats on stage.

The audience was welcomed by Headmaster Mr William Pringle, who introduced the evening’s guest speaker, Mr David Langmead, chairman of the School Governing Body.

Following Mr Langmead’s speech, Mr Pringle then delivered the traditional Headmaster’s Address, during which he briefly sketched the achievements of the year.

The senior choir’s performance of “When you believe” by Stephen Schwartz received a resounding applause.

Once again it was after this musical interlude, that the distribution of the prizes took place. The prizes were presented by special guest Mrs Sandy McNaughton.

This was followed by vocalists Taylyn Miller and Zintle Maki, accompanied on the piano by Hannah Watermeyer, singing “You Say” by Lauren Diagle.

The highlight of the evening was the induction of the 2019/20 Head Prefects. Congratulations to Bowen Langmead (Headboy), Sakhe Booi (Headgirl), Brett Amsterdam (Deputy Headboy) and Laetitia Theron (Deputy Headgirl).

To conclude the evening, the outgoing head prefects of 2018/19, Peter Watermeyer and Jenna McNaughton, delivered a vote of thanks.

After this very inspiring and successful ceremony, it is hoped that our learners will find in the words spoken, and the experiences lived, clear points from which to chart their course.

We congratulate all of those who excelled in their academic, culture, service or sport and consequently received their well-deserved awards.

Junior Prizegiving 2019

The UHS Primary Department’s prizegiving ceremony – during which the Grade 5 to 7 learners were awarded for their hard work throughout the year – was held on Friday morning, 11 October, in the Union High School hall.

Upon arrival, guests were welcomed to the school with the beautiful sounds of the junior marimba band and after everyone had filed into the hall, the junior choir, accompanied by Mrs Sanette Brink, delivered a stunning rendition of ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons.

Caytah-Leigh Koeberg and Tyra Binney then led the devotion.

The school’s headmaster, Mr William Pringle, delivered the customary Headmaster’s Address, after which Mr David Langmead, chairman of the School Governing Body, gave a beautiful speech in which he encouraged the learners to follow their dreams. To conclude the speeches, Mrs Yvette Cloete (Head of the Primary Department) delivered a report of the year’s activities.

Next up on the programme was the presentation of the academic prizes, which was this year conducted by special guest, Mrs Tasneem Mahomed.

After this was concluded, Aaminah Steele, accompanied by Sasha Cochrane on the piano, delivered a beautiful performance of the song ‘This is me’ from The Greateast Showman.

Pianist Erin Gedult then entertained the audience with the piece ‘Arabeque No 2’ by Burgmuller.

Lastly, the music, cultural and sports awards were presented, after which the ceremony was concluded with a word of thanks delivered by Grade 7 learner Terry Mabuni.
