This past week saw twelve talented Union High School, Graaff-Reinet junior tennis players showcasing their abilities over three days of intense competition at the 2023 Spar Cradock Primary Tennis Tournament held in Cradock.

This tournament forms part of the u/12 talent identifications process in aid of identifying talent for the 2024 u/13 Craven Week side.

1st Hockey 2023 Season To Date

Season Overview
Union first hockey team had an exceptional hockey season during the 2023 season. The girls’ demonstrated exceptional grit and resilience, refusing to back down even in the face of tough challenges posed by tough opponents. They fought for every inch of the pitch, displaying remarkable determination and a never-say-die attitude. This unwavering spirit was the driving force behind their success.

Team Strategy
The success of the first team during the hockey season can be attributed to a well-executed team strategy, which emphasized the following elements:

Strong Defense: The team emphasized on a solid defensive structure, limiting the opponent’s scoring opportunities and providing a solid foundation to outlet from: Musa Zweni; Caytah-Leigh Koeberg; Anna Pringle; Sarah Jacobs; Tara Ferreira; Kenza Neill; Leigh-Ann Murray.

Counter-attacking Principles: we demonstrated impressive attacking options, combining skillful plays and quick transitions to create quality goal scoring opportunities: Brigette Oelofsen; Leah Marais; Sade May; Micole Vorster; Misha Newton; Lana Bouwer; Aaminah Steele Charlize Vorster.

Team Cohesion: The players exhibited a high level of chemistry and understanding on and off the field, which enhanced their ability to work together as a unit and support each other throughout the season.

The excellent hockey season is a testament to the players’ talent, hard work, and dedication. Their remarkable achievements, both individually and as a team, have brought pride to the School and joy to our supporters. we look ahead to the next season, it is evident that UNION FIRST HOCKEY TEAM will continue to be a force to be reckoned with, and their success will serve as an inspiration for future generations of hockey players at the school.

Hockey Results vs York High School

This past Friday afternoon, 28 July, Union High School, Graaff-Reinetโ€™s 1st team hockey girls took the field against a visiting York High School.

They put up a fantastic fight, playing with incredible teamwork and passion throughout the game. However, in a nail-biting finish, York managed to secure a narrow victory with a score of 2-1 in the last couple of minutes.

In addition to the 1st team match, our ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฒ๐—” team and ๐˜‚/๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฐ๐—” team also demonstrated their talent and sportsmanship. The u/16A team faced a tough challenge, but their resilience and dedication were truly commendable. Although they lost with a score of 6-0, their spirit remained unbroken. Similarly, our u/14A team fought hard and showcased their skills, unfortunately losing with a score of 2-1.

SENIOR HOCKEY

On Friday afternoon, 21 July, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st team hockey girls embarked on an exciting outing to Makhanda.

Upon their arrival, they faced off against Kingswood College, unfortunately losing 2 – 1.

Despite their best efforts, they narrowly lost with a score of 1 – 0. We want to acknowledge their hard work and determination throughout the match.

Accompanying our 1st team were the u/14A and u/16A teams, who showed great promise in their respective encounters.

The u/13B side showcases their resilience with a hard-fought 0 – 0 draw, while the u/11A side triumphs with an impressive 2 – 0 win.
