𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗧𝗢 Union High School, Graaff-Reinet junior rugby players 𝗢𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘅𝘁𝗼𝗻, 𝗞𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗺𝗹𝗮 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗷𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗵𝗮, 𝗕𝗝 𝗙𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗶 and 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗻, who were selected for the Karoo Sub Union u/13 Rugby Team.

Congratulations also to their coach, Mr Mpilo Njoloza, who will be coaching the team, alongside Laer Volkskool’s Mr Ruben van Zyl.

Sport Results

In today’s rugby fixture against a visiting Muir College, the u/11A team – Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s undoubted 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬 – showed great form and passion to win their match (the first of the day) 24 – 0.

𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘 to Lukhona Bulembu (2), Robert Finlaison (1) and Sibusiso Jantjies (1) on their respective tries, two of which were successfully converted by Lukhona.

This past Saturday, 15 April, Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 𝗨𝟭𝟯𝗔 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 team travelled to Gqeberha where they faced their Sunridge Primary School counterparts for their first fixture of the season.

Although the girls played well and displayed some lovely skill on the day, in the end, hockey is a game of opportunity as much as it is a game of skill and the Union girls fell short in that they did not capitalise on the opportunities presented.

Sunridge claimed the win with 3 goals to Union’s 2.

Big pat on the back, however, to all the girls for playing their hearts out – the grass was a challenging surface to play on, but they 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀.

We look forward to seeing the team go from strength to strength this season as they are a talented group of girls with a passionate and knowledgeable coach.

The u/11 girls played their first full-field, 11-a-side hockey match this past Saturday against Sunridge Park. The girls have had to learn new structures and rules in a very short period of time and have done exceptionally well to apply all instructions.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘺 2 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 1.

The u/13B side enjoyed a good start to their season, 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟬-𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸. The girls dominated this match and unfortunately did not capitalize on opportunities to score goals. We predict an excellent season ahead for this group of girls.

Union High School, Graaff-Reinet’s 1st team hockey girls attended the Fairmont Hockey Festival and what an amazing experience it has been. The Belgotex Sport Fairmont Easter Tournament unites 64 teams over 4 days (from 5 to 8 April) in a show of competitive sportsmanship.

The girls played six very exciting matches against stellar competition, with each of the Union girls displaying a lot of skill and determination (in very hot conditions) throughout!

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 to hockey players 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗮 𝗭𝘄𝗲𝗻𝗶, 𝗦𝗼𝘀𝗼 𝗠𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗼, 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻 and 𝗟𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗔𝗻𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 who have been selected for the Travel & Sport Invitational 2023 Hockey Team that will be touring northwestern Europe from 3 to 12 October.

1st Team – Gregg Beiling Festival
Union’s 1st XI hockey girls participated in the 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗚 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 in East London this past weekend.

On Friday they played their first match against Eldoraigne High School, which saw Union lose 2 – 1.

On Saturday they played two matches. The first was against a Top 10 side, Collegiate High School, which saw the girls go down 1 – 6. A couple of hours later, Union played against Merifield College, drawing the match 2 – 2.

Their last encounter of the festival on Sunday, saw Union conclude their weekend with a 1-all draw against Sasolburg High School.

We would like to thank coach Calvin Beck  for looking after our girls, as well as the parents who supported the girls throughout the weekend.

U/16A team: Pearson Festival
Pearson High School hosted their annual u/16 Girls’ 𝗛𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗟 this past weekend in Gqeberha.

The Union u/16A side, accompanied by new coach Arijana Botha, played well and with great energy throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, 18 March, Union took on Saint Andrew’s School on home soil in an annual derby day that has become a 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧, eagerly awaited by both schools.

As expected, the day started with a bang, with all matches being played at a furious pace, with teams from both sides attacking and defending with everything they had.

Aggressive attacking and big hits in defence saw our senior teams enjoying more success than the juniors. Congratulations to the u/15As and 2^nd XVs on their victories.

Union’s 𝟭𝗦𝗧 𝗫𝗩 put on a brilliant performance to beat the Saints 18 – 8, ending the day off on a high note for Union.

The Union side played with the wind in the first half and, although they had numerous opportunities to cross over the try line, they were unable to do so until a moment of stellar play secured Union a lead of 5 – 0.  St Andrew’s however followed this up with a try against the run of play, followed up by a penalty, giving them a 8 – 5 lead going into half-time.

Union looked a better team in the second half, controlling possession and territory which eventually resulted in them scoring their second try, to take the lead by 13 – 8. A penalty in favour of Union, secured them the win with 18 points to Saint Andrew’s 8.
